Tierras

Tierras came about from the Mediterranean artisanal tradition and focuses on the concept of sedimentation where the elements seems to come from earth, marked by the hand of a man and the time passing by.

It’s a re-interpretation of traditional craftsmanship, where different kind of terracotta and clays, chromatically matching with each other, combine and mix, enriching and softening the black base of recycled ceramics on which they deposit. 

Realized in unglazed porcelain stoneware using the innovative Continua technology, which allows to work with dry powders, the tiles results extremely tactile and the color palette is characterized by natural yet rich and deep earthy shades, saturated by the black base underneath. These are combined with a series of putties in contrast with the previous nuances: an ironic interpretation of the joint that gives the environments a contemporary look. 

Patricia Urquiola, Spanish architect and designer, but italian at heart, joined the Mutina team in 2008. She designed numerous collections, including Déchier, Bas-Relief, Azulej, Tierras, Déchirer XL, Celosia, El Lobo, Mater, Chamotte e Jali. 

“I needed a real tactile material, which did not pretend to be anything else. I was looking for a warm element, both visually and to the touch. It should remind of something familiar, of terracotta and lava, and which is at the same time something different. A return to the base, a homecoming, but new base, a new home."
